About ThunderChicks #10577

Irma L. Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School has had a middle school robotics team for a long time, and they enthusiastically participated in the FIRST Lego, and now VEX Robotics competition.

Thirteen years after the establishment of our school in 2004,  we finally were able to start a High School Robotics Club. The Thunder Chicks is the first high school robotics team created at Irma L. Rangel YWLS. This club came to fruition in 2015 through the persistent efforts of three former middle school robotics teammates who could not come to peace with the idea that their robotics journey must end in middle school. Their success has continued to grow since, competing in the FIRST Tech Challenge (FTC), and in 2018, they began competing in FIRST Robotics (FRC).

ThunderChicks, Too #13783

Two clucks and a bolt

Originally starting as only one team, Thunder Chicks expanded into a second team in 2017. Thunder Chicks influenced numerous young women, so a second team was established, Thunder Chicks Too #13783 was born. Here at Irma Rangel Young Women’s Leadership School, we strive to expose young women to STEM and encourage them to pursue careers viewed as non-conventional for women.

As a first year team in 2017 we attended our first competition at Townview High School. We rocked the competition! We were not only nominated for the Motivate Award but we also received our very first award, the Rockwell Innovator Award.

The Hatching of the Thunder Chicks También

As our love for hatching new ideas, new creations, and passion grew, we knew our nest of Chicks had to grow. Thus, Thunder Chicks También formed in 2018. Over the past few years, we have managed to make a name for ourselves, and were proud to be known as an all-girls team. As we sadly said goodbye to our founding members and sisters, we welcomed the incoming ones. Thus, the hatching of  Thunder Chicks También #15372. We hope to make our preceding teams proud.
